American writer Sidney Sheldon
who is also credited for creating other drama such as ‘the patty
duke show’ and ‘I dream of Jeannie’, collaborated with renowned
writer and producer Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg to create the
late 70s’ popular television series ‘Hart to Hart’ for the ABC
Television Network; the American Television series aired to the
public from 1979 to 1984.
The plot of this TV series follows
Jonathan Hart – played by Robert Wagner, a millionaire (self made)
and director of his global company, Hart Industries and his lovable
wife Jennifer Wagner – played by Stefanie Powers; who was a
journalist albeit a freelance one. Every episode follow this
glamorous and wealthy couples’ lives in their some what amateur
detective escapades in solving cases which most often then not
involve murder, theft, smuggling, and international espionage.
Jonathan and Jennifer’s life would not run smoothly had it not been
for the loyal service of their pleasant butler Max, who assists
around their luxurious Californian home; max’s character is played
by Lionel Stander.
Other minor roles in the series are that
of the Chauffeur who tends to get involved in the Harts’ ‘cases’
at their behest, and the cook. The Hart’s also keep a dog in their
home named freeway; a name given to him because of where they found
and rescued him.
Hart to Hart show on DVD can now be
yours with complete collection of all the episodes and seasons on
DVDs in one package giving you hundreds of hours of fun and
excitement with your loved ones.
It is worth noting that the
original script was written for an entirely different network (CBS)
under a totally different name – Double Twist, with a plot along
the lines of a couple who played spies (think Mr. and Mrs. Smith), by
Sidney Sheldon. The original script was never developed for
television, and it took the intervention of well known producer Aaron
Spelling and Leonard Goldberg to recreate a contemporary setting for
the script.
This led them to Tom Mankiewicz who worked his
magic and developed ‘Hart to Hart’ also making his directorial
debut on the show by directing the pilot episode. Tom remained with
the television series for latter episodes, but only as a well versed
creative consultant. Casting for the role of Jonathan changed a few
times with indecision over whether Cary Grant should have the part or
Robert Wagner; because of Grant’s age and being retired, the more
natural choice for the part was Robert Wagner.
